Custom Grown Greenhouses’ owner retires

After nearly four decades, The Gateway’s very own Custom Grown Greenhouses has closed down. Any remaining stock is currently available at the Layton Fruit Market 1838 E Layton Ave for the rest of the summer.

The community is sad to see them go, but we would like to take the opportunity to congratulate Paul on his semi retirement! According to the company’s Facebook page: next year you will be able to find Paul at the Layton Fruit Market, where he will have a small greenhouse.

Paul started working with plants more than 50 years ago! In 1984, he started his own business selling plants from a makeshift stand in a grocery store parking lot. By 1988, Paul, along with his wife Sue and her sister, continued to grow a business at a location near Armour Avenue.  As word of mouth traveled, the business grew.

In 1992 Paul began leasing the greenhouses on S. 6th Street as he simply needed more room to grow his plants. In 2010 Paul was ready to bring his entire business to the location on S. 6th Street. He purchased greenhouses from other area growers that no longer needed them, allowing him to continue to grow the business into Custom Grown Greenhouses as we know it.

Any remaining stock is currently available at the Layton Fruit Market 1838 E Layton Ave for the rest of the summer.
